Thank you for joining this thought-provoking community meetup!
Special thanks to Dr. Lauren Pasquarella Daley for leading the discussion, sharing her insights and creative thinking around how we can bring more innovation to flexible work, how we can better capture work flexibility and maintain it as times change, and the future impact that flexible work will have on women in the workplace.
Flexible work isn’t just for knowledge workers. And, even though access has expanded to other types of workers, we need to continue to think bigger.
It’s time we throw out the old definition of flexible work and come up with a new one – one that speaks to what it’ll look like in five, ten years time.

00:40:45 Matt Neal: I have a thought/theory on why CEOs want people back in the office which I haven’t really heard discussed…would love to hear this group’s thoughts.
00:41:50 Kathy Hardy: Replying to “I have a thought/the…” I recently spoke to a group of CEO’s in the staffing industry, and they needed people back in the office more often to help mentor the news teammates informally
00:42:05 Kathy Hardy: Replying to “I have a thought/the…” new teammates
00:43:04 Link: I would also add that champions must believe in both the cause/mission of the company and they must trust and believe in the leadership. A champion will be self motivated to show up, get involved and give ideas when they feel that the mission and leadership align with their values. Champions are mission driven first and fame second

00:43:45 John Healy: Replying to “I have a thought/the…” mentoring can happen without an “office”….
00:43:48 Steve Rader: It seems like a lot of the time the dialogue around remote/onsite and full-time/part-time turns into a binary discussion rather than a spectrum.

Agree and that’s one of the aspects we were digging into today in the roundtable. Part of the discussion is the culture and expectation around respecting boundaries for off-time and away-time. Relieving the expectation that you’ll join a call from you kid’s pediatrician’s waiting room

but that also means that employees should not be folding laundry or washing dishes while ‘in a meeting”!
00:49:33 Ben Ross: Purpose is the key point here – great point Kathy
00:50:07 Ben Ross: The old way of communication is context switch heavy – you always pay a penalty
00:50:22 Brian Watson: Replying to “It seems like a lot …”
@Carin-Isabel Knoop though I have found that I listen more while folding laundry. I can multitask a physical task with a mental task. Much better than trying to answer emails or slack while in a meeting

00:50:39 Mickey Pelletier (CWM Strategies): That CEO is still disrupting, whether you’re in person or remote, you still have to take time away from whatever you’re doing – scheduled or impromptu.

00:53:22 Steve Rader: Watercooler interactions were real… they were just way less often than people want to admit…. It is possible to create interactions (like the breakout rooms in THIS meeting) where you can get those kinds of interactions MORE often.
00:53:30 Barb Hansen: Replying to “I have a thought/t…”
I have been a product leader in the tech startup space for +20 years and I have worked both in-office and remotely. Interacting with remote staff as a leader is a learned skill and muscle that needs to be trained. Being open to build and then train that “remote leadershiip muscle” seems to be outside of what many leaders want to do. It would be interesting to see what are the demographic differences between leaders who are open to that change and those who aren’t.
00:53:33 Dr. Lauren Pasquarella Daley (she/her): And we’ve not even touched on the biases that drive career opportunities for women and people from marginalized identities when it comes to onsite and hybrid work.
00:53:44 Link: CEOs show up. They care about the little things as well as the big things that drive revenue. They care about community and culture among their organization and they recognize that “how” they show up speaks volumes to the rest of the team. It’s then that champions come out to lead the mission…it goes back to the reasons why having champions is important. CEOs are only as good as their team
00:53:45 Carin-Isabel Knoop: Replying to “It seems like a lot …”
i dont like being on video and always offer people to be off video if that makes them feel better and they can multi task without pretending to be paying attention. big fan of generally reducing stress.

I don’t disagree with any of these points. I still believe we need to start with understanding where the old fashion CEO’s are, and then lead them to where they need to be!😄

00:58:01 Brandon Dwight / Open Assembly: How do Open Talent platforms play a role in this?
