A combination of factors has strengthened the state of the independent workforce in 2023 which has driven an increase in both the supply and demand for independent workers, making independent work more prevalent, secure, and lucrative. This thriving sector, now comprising 72.1 million Americans or about 45% of the workforce, is propelled by optimism, resilience, and highly sought-after skills. This and more are highlighted in the latest research by MBO Partners – State of Independence in America 2023 which Steve King of Emergent Research and McLean Robbins of MBO Partners presented during this OA Community meeting.
With baby boomers transitioning out of full-time roles, the desire for flexibility, work-life balance, and economic factors driving side gigs, the independent workforce is on the rise. Technology plays a pivotal role, enabling growth in both the supply and demand of independent workers through hiring platforms and collaboration technologies. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about this latest research and the transformation of work!

00:41:58 DSWIFT1: How are all of those new independent workers getting health care?
00:42:34 Link: Nobody wants to go back to being “owned” by companies they work for

00:44:28 Bondili, Balaji: Also, how does this square with tons of reports that employees are staying up and not quitting. We are seeing historically low voluntary attrition rates
00:45:28 Bob Pulver: Joined very late, sorry if this was covered, but curious about recent concerns about Generative AI negatively impacting freelance work (opportunities and rates)
00:51:31 David Ehrenthal: Curious if the demand is keeping up with the supply. Is there going to be more difficulty finding clients and downward pressure on fees now and in the future if this trend continues?.
00:54:30 Link: I would be interested to know what their earning rate average is for each category. I think people’s dependency on income and benefits effects their willingness or ability to go independent
00:56:15 jian pang: Most of the independent workers- small businesses and their employees do not have the financial insurance. Including the health care insurance ( that is the basic) but most of them since they are in developing their business, their income level in fact was kept very low. I love to talk to MBS CEO, c- suit for the future governmental regulation program would help. ( that was my case written)

01:05:07 Steve Rader: Thanks all! Steve, this was amazing! Great meeting as always. Got to run.
01:05:58 Bob Pulver: That Q would get quite different responses if done today, I think. Would love to see data that overlays AI risk (task or role level) vs freelance categories
01:06:01 Gabrielle Tenaglia: Have to run. Such great thinking. Thank you!
01:06:05 Link: I feel there is this middle independent that is also needing workforce…technology is the way to do that. I think the income is going to vary because of international impact too.
01:06:13 Brandon Dwight: Thank you, Steve and McLean! This call recording, chatroom, and slides will be available here within the next 24 hrs: https://open-assembly.com/blog/oa-community-meeting-nov-16-state-of-independence-in-america-2023
